Jonny ran three events today in Day 1 of the Central District Championships. First up was the 4×800 meter relay. This was also the only finals event for track for the day. Jonny was the final leg. They needed to finish 4th or better to move on to Regionals. Jonny got the baton with the team in 7th place. He started taking positions at the 300 meter mark after catching up to a pack in front of him. At the 400 meter mark the team was in 5th place, still not well enough to advance. At 500 meters he moved up to 4th. At the 600 he moved up to 2nd, but was too far behind to get the win. The team finished 2nd place with a time of 8:13.25
Next up was the 800 Meter Run. Jonny’s only individual race. This was just a preliminary to get to the finals on Saturday. Jonny ran a very slow paced race as only the top 8 in each heat advance to the finals on Saturday. He ended up 4th in his heat. He was joking around with a kid from Olentangy Orange, before the race and evidently they told each other they were going to try to tie at the finish line. You can tell how easy this race was run as Jonny sprinted at the end to catch up to his friend, so they could tie. Jonny actually was recorded at 2:05.37. Here is the video below. Watch how Jonny catches Tommy at the end and they joke around as they cross the finish line together.
The last race of the evening was the 4×400 Meter Relay. Again this was just a preliminary and the team needed to be in the top 8 to advance. Jonny got the baton with no one else in sight in last place. Jonny ran as best he could and I had him timed at 50.6. The team ended up with a time of 3:33.31 which was only good enough for 10th place.
