Galion Cross Country Festival

Today Jonny ran at the Galion Cross Country Festival at Amanns Park just south of Galion Ohio. The weather was cool today with temps in the upper 50’s at the 1:30pm race time for Division II Boys Varsity race. Last Year Jonny ran the race in 18:09 and finished 60th out of 136 runners.

He stayed near the front of the pack throughout the race and finished 14th out of 184 runners with a new person best time of 16:33.9. He finished 2nd on the team and earned the team 14 points. Granville was 2nd place with 100 points, 1st place Lexington had 73 points and 3rd place, Bay, had 137 points in comparison.

This year at Galion on the same course he was able to shave 1:36 off his time from last year.

I have some video of Jonny competing in the race.

Official times can be found at Delta Timing or on the Aces Running Database.

McGowan Invitational

Jonny ran at the McGowan Invitational today held at Watkins High School in Pataskala. The weather today was partly cloudy with the temperature at 79 degrees and 82% humidity. They run all the boys together, both varsity and open, there are 291 kids running in one race.

Jonny got off to a good start and made sure he was in a good position before they entered the woods where the path narrows and there are limited places to pass if you are in a large group. He kept himself in a good position throughout the race and ended up 17th overall out of 291 racers. He finished 3rd for the team with a time 17:12, which helped his team take first place out of 24 total teams.

The official race results can be found on the Watkins Track Site or the Granville Aces Running Database.

I did take some video of Jonny running which can be seen below.

Jonny finished this race last year at 18:24, so he was able to improve his time by 1:12. He ran at the Licking County League Championship on this same course last year as well and finished in 18:00, so he also beat that time by 0:48.

Also, to give you a better idea on how well Jonny ran, there were several divisions that raced at Watkins today. There were 1,217 high school boys that raced. If they all would have raced together Jonny would have finished 57th out of 1,217 runners.

Granville Cross Country Invitational

Jonny started the 2014 Cross Country season at a home meet today. They ran at Bryn Du Mansion in Granville where there is a long steep hill climb that has to be completed twice on the course. Most of the runners say it’s the hardest course they run all season. On the way to drop Jonny off, I asked him if he had any goals for this race. He said he wanted to beat 17 minutes. That would be a pretty aggressive drop as his best time last season was 17:39 at a much easier course. Last year at Granville was his slowest race of the season with a 19:18, which was also his first 5K race.

Jonny ran in the High School Boys Varsity race that started at 10:00am. By then the weather was starting to get hot and humid with the temps being 77 and the humidity at 70%. At the start he made sure he was in the top quarter, not too fast, but not to get too far back in the pack where you could get stuck behind a slower group. By the time the first 1/2 mile was completed Jonny had positioned himself around the 10th spot. He pretty much kept with that group for the rest of the race.

He ended up in 12th overall out of 144 racers. He finished with a new personal best of 16:52.6 which he beat last years time by 2:26! He didn’t leave much in the tank after this race, but he didn’t hit that wall that some runners run into either. He ran about as perfect of a race as he could for himself.  A year makes a big difference!  Also he was the first finisher for Granville.  I wonder what his goal for the next race is?

Here is some video I shot from this race:

We have backyard chickens

Nikki and Stephanie ordered 5 chicks in the mail early in the summer. They started off being raised in the house and moved to the garage after about 6 weeks. They spent the night in one of the dog crates and I built a little chicken tractor out of poultry netting and PVC pipe that was light enough for one person to move around to different spots in the yard, but sturdy enough to keep curious cats and dogs out.

Over the 4th of July we inherited 3 full grown hens from the Ward family. At that point I started digging out an area in our garden to build a semi permanent chicken coop and run. It took a week to get everything measured out and level. Nikki talked to friend that had just disassembled their kids swing set and we decided to recycle some of their 4×4 wooden frames. We painted the wood and pocked up some more lumber to start building our 6×12 chicken run with built in coop. The chicken run is still being worked on, but the entire run and roof has been framed in. The coop is completed to the point where the hens are now staying in it for the night and are starting to use the built in nest box.

The chicken coop includes a web cam with night vision infrared capabilities so we can keep an eye on them during the night when they are in the coop. Anyone can check in on them at http://chickens.ourhobby.com. The username and password is guest. If you are using Internet Explorer select Active X mode or Mobile Mode. Hammy passes

Hammy, one of our male cats, was found this evening by one of our neighbors. He had passed away under their front porch. He had been missing for a week and we had an idea he has passed, as he was never gone that long before.

He was a real character who couldn’t just walk by our other cat, Joey, without slapping him on top of the head and just continue walking. He had the typical cat mentality that he was too cool for the rest of the world and we were here to entertain and serve him.

When we got him as a kitten he was very hyper and active and the movie, “Over the Hedge” was just out. He reminded the kids of the hyper active squirrel in the movie and was named after him.

Stephanie graduates from Granville High School

Stephanie graduated from Granville High School today.  We started the day with a nice breakfast at Nikki’s cousin’s house.  Nikki’s Aunt and Uncle were down as well and it was nice getting to visit with them for a couple of hours.

Not only were Nikki’s parents here to witness it, but my parents and my two sisters also came down from Michigan to help Stephanie celebrate.  After the graduation ceremonies, we picked up Chipotle and brought it back to our house.  Every ate and chatted and then Stephanie opened her cards and gifts from everyone.  Then my parents and sister’s made the trek back to Michigan, which had to be a very long for them.

We thank all our family members who traveled 300 miles each way to celebrate Stephanie’s big day, it meant a lot to her to share this exciting day with family.

Ashley turns 25!

Ashley turned 25 on May 30th.   Nikki’s parents came down on the 31st to celebrate Ashley’s birthday and Stephanie’s graduation.  We went into Columbus so they could meet Apollo and we had a very nice dinner at Marcella’s.  We then spent some time back at the kid’s apartment and had a nice time socializing.  It was a very nice day will the family.

Regional Meet – Pickerington North High School

Jonny made it to one of the 4 Regional Meets in Ohio.  Today is the finals for the 4×800 meter relay and the preliminaries for the 4×400 meter relay with the finals to be held on Friday May 30th.

Jonny was the lead off leg on the 4×800 meter relay.  He ran his leg in 2:03.7 which was a new personal best for him.  The team completed the relay in 8:11.37 and finshed 9th.   They were eliminated from moving on to the state finals in the 4×800.

Jonny was the 3rd leg in the 4×400 preliminaries.  Jonny ran his leg in 53 second and the team ran finished in 3:27.01, which again was not fast enough to get them to the regional finals held on Saturday.  They ran it the previous week in 3:22.06, but this week even if they were able to replicate that, they would have ended up in 7th and been eliminated anyway.

Jonny’s season is over, but he had a wonderful year of running.  We are looking forward to see him run again next year.

Ohio Central District Champioships – Division 1 – District 3

Jonny ran in one of the 16 District Championships held in Ohio.  Last Thursday they advanced in the 4×800 to the one of the four Regional Championships in the state.  They were the District Champions in the 4×400 race today with a time of 3:22.06.  Jonny ran a personal best split time of 52.00.  This put the 4×400 team in the Regional finals as well.  The boys and girls teams took 2nd overall at the District Championships.

Next week the Regional Championships will be held at Pickerington High School North.  They will run the championship 4×800 race on Wednesday and the 4×400 preliminary race on Wednesday as well.  If they are the top 4 in the 4×800, they move on to the State Championships the following week.  If they are one of the top 8 in the 4×400 preliminaries, they will advance to the Regional Championship Finals on Friday the 30th of May.  Then they will need to be a top 4 finisher to move on the State Championships.

Ohio Central District Championships – Division 1 – District 3

Jonny participated in Ohio Central District Championships for Division 1 – District 3.  He ran in the 4×800 meter relay and the 4×400 relay.  Most of the events today were preliminaries for Saturday’s finals.  The one of the exceptions was the 4×800 relay.

Jonny ran the third leg in the 4×800 relay with his split being 2:05.  The team ended up with a time of 8:14.51 and placed 4th, which qualified them for the Regional Finals next week.

He also ran the 4×400 which was a preliminary race.  They only needed to one of the top 8 teams to make it to the finals on Saturday.  Jonny ran his leg of the 4×400 in 53 seconds which was a new Personal Best for him.  The team finished in 3:26.75 and took 2nd overall, so they are in the finals for Saturday.  If they finish 4th or better on Saturday, they will move on to the Regionals in the 4×400 as well.
